VINCI, SORIBA AND FIXINOX GUIDED ARCHITECTS AND JOURNALISTS ON LA MECA SITE, LAST MONTH, ABOUT THE PRECAST CONCRETE CLADDING IN PROCESS
Architects : BIG & Freaks Achiteture; Pictures : Stéphane Miget
This visit at La MECA REMINDS the REQUIREMENTS for a cladding support system
Framing and fasteners must withstand the several loadings (dead loads, wind, earthquake, THERMAL EXPANSION)
The system must minimize thermal bridges and offer complete 3D thermal modeling
The system must comply with the rules of protection of inhabitants against fire (These conformities are based on compromises and are therefore minimums)
The system should be easy to adjust and allow a proper adjustment of the panels DURING INSTALLATION
The system must minimize the cost OF maintenance by resisting corrosion, stainless steel also offers the possibility of avoiding inspections of the fixings.
The supply must be complete and from a single supplier (designs , calculations, manufacturing, verification of conformity to standards, supplies of expansion bolts and of all pertinent items, quality control)
For the reasons above, stainless steel is the best choice because it offers
- a) A very long life
- b) excellent mechanical performances
- c) low thermal conductivity compared to other metals (15 times less than aluminum)
- d) it is weldable and deformable
- e) Best fire resistance of all industrial metals used for building construction
The system provides great architectural freedom
The fixings are invisible.
The “checkerboard” effect disappears in favor of larger and more varied volumes or perimeters.
The exterior cladding is not necessarily made of parallelograms.
Fewer pairs of expansion dowels, angles or hangers minimize the cost of installation
The prices of the mineral facing solutions (measured in Euros / m2 of installed facades) are lower than those cladding with thin composite panels.
